ELLIS COUNTY SHERIFF JOHNNY BROWN: Narcotics Special Investigation Unit continues to choke county’s illegal drug business

I’m pleased to report that the Ellis County Sheriff’s Office’s Special Investigation Unit (Narcotics) continues to serve our community well by filing criminal cases, making arrests and seizing drugs from the criminals who try to do business in our county.

During 2016, our SIU worked 136 felony cases, 104 misdemeanor cases and two cases involving found property. These cases were worked across Ellis County and resulted in the seizure of $549,079 worth of illegal drugs.

The list of seized drugs includes almost 43 pounds of methamphetamine, which carried a street value of $457,614, and about 446 gross grams of cocaine, with a street value of more than $40,000. The list doesn’t stop there, with more than $11,000 worth of marijuana seized. The other illegal drugs seized included crack, THC (hashish), heroin, K2 and MDMA.

Our SIU also was involved in the seizure of pharmaceutical drugs that were being illegally trafficked, with 277.5 doses of drugs with names ranging from Adderall to Zolpidem. From these numbers, I hope you understand why we encourage everyone to participate in the semi-annual drug take back events that allow you to drop off – with no questions asked – any unused or expired over-the-counter or prescription medications.

If you can’t make one of the drug take back events, I’d like to remind you about the five permanent drop box locations where you can safely dispose of these medications during normal business hours:

• Ellis County Constable Pct. 1 Office, 207 S. Sonoma Trail, Ennis

• Italy Police Department, 161 W. Main St., Italy

• Midlothian Police Department, 1150 N. U.S. Highway 67, Midlothian

• Red Oak Police Department, 547 N. Methodist St., Red Oak

• Waxahachie Police Department, 216 N. College St., Waxahachie

In addition to all of the drug seizures made during 2016, our SIU also confiscated $8,974 in cash, two vehicles and four weapons relating to the criminal activity. Since 2009, our SIU has filed 1,958 criminal cases, made 1,482 arrests, recovered 46 guns from criminals and removed more than $71.5 million worth of drugs from our streets.

I believe our SIU’s success speaks for itself as to the job it is doing in helping make Ellis County a safer place and one where we want to raise our families and enjoy our neighbors. I couldn’t be prouder of what it accomplishes on your behalf, year in and year out.

Please, everyone, let’s keep our military and service personnel in our thoughts and prayers. We enjoy our rights and freedoms because of their service and safekeeping of our great nation. Y’all have a Blessed Week.

Johnny Brown has served as Sheriff of Ellis County since Jan. 1, 2009, and is a graduate of the National Sheriff’s Institute. He has been in law enforcement for more than 20 years and holds a Master’s Peace Officer’s Certificate with the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Education.

Reward offered in 1994 Falfurrias cold case homicide

$

AUSTIN – The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) is asking for the public’s help in solving the 1994 murder of Mike DeLeon (20) in Falfurrias, and a reward up to $6,000 is being offered for information that leads to the arrest of those responsible, if the tip is received before the next featured case the following month.

Mike DeLeon

On the morning of April 10, 1994, the Falfurrias Fire Department responded to a house fire on West 12th Street in Falfurrias. After the fire was extinguished, DeLeon was found dead inside the residence. DeLeon was the only person in the residence at the time of the fire, and investigators believe the fire was the result of arson.

In addition to DeLeon’s case, the DPS Texas Rangers’ Unsolved Homicides website provides information on more than 75 cases in an effort to help garner public interest in unsolved or “cold cases.” Texas Crime Stoppers recently began offering rewards (funded by the Governor’s Criminal Justice Division and administered by DPS) of up to $3,000 for information that leads to the arrest of those responsible for any cold case listed on the website. For more information, visit the Texas Ranger cold case website at: http://www.dps.texas.gov/TexasRangers/UnsolvedHomicides/index.htm.

Additionally, as part of a DPS public awareness program, one case from the Texas Ranger Unsolved Crimes Investigation (Cold Case) Program is featured each month in an effort to generate new investigative leads and bring attention to these cold cases. The Texas Crime Stoppers reward is increased up to $6,000 for the featured case in hopes that the higher reward money will generate additional tips. The higher reward amount will only be paid if the tip is submitted before the next case is featured.

To be eligible for the cash rewards, tipsters must provide information to authorities by calling the Crime Stoppers hotline at 1-800-252-TIPS (8477). All tips are anonymous.

Individuals also can submit information through the Texas Ranger Cold Case website or contact us by telephone at 1-800-346-3243 (DPS Missing Persons Hotline).

The Texas Ranger Unsolved Crimes Investigation Program was created to assist Texas law enforcement agencies investigating unsolved murders or violent serial crimes. Since there is no statute of limitations for the offense of murder, investigators pursue these cases to a successful resolution or until no viable leads remain.

High-capacity centers feature expanded office capacity in metro areas

AUSTIN – The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) is reminding residents to get ahead of the Spring Break influx at driver license offices by renewing their license or identification (ID) card early or online. The weeks surrounding and during Spring Break tend to be one of the busiest times at driver license offices, and many Texans are eligible to forgo the trip to the office completely via online renewal of their license, identification card or change of address atwww.Texas.gov.

“During the busy weeks around Spring Break, we want to remind eligible customers that they can fit their driver license needs into their schedules by taking advantage of our online services to complete transactions – anytime, anywhere,” said DPS Director Steven McCraw. “We also encourage metro-area residents to go to a high-capacity driver license office if an in-person visit is necessary.”

Located in the Austin, Dallas, Fort Worth, Houston and San Antonio metropolitan areas, high-capacity driver license mega centers offer larger facilities and technology designed to improve efficiency and customer service. Mega centers and other offices across the state leverage a queuing system that offers customers the convenient option to reserve a spot in line before going to the office. Customers can virtually enter the line via cell phone, online or using a land line.  For a list of the driver license offices that offer this feature or to schedule an appointment before arriving, visit:http://www.dps.texas.gov/DriverLicense/onlineScheduling.aspx.

To be eligible to renew online, the card holder must be a U.S. citizen and the expiration date on the card must be within one year. (Note: Customers can renew their card early at any time within one year of the expiration date and choose a convenient time that fits their schedule.) When the card is renewed, the expiration date on the new card will be six years after the current card’s expiration date, whether customers renew early or not.

Additionally, in order to renew online, the card cannot have been expired for more than two years. Requirements for renewing online are available atTexas.gov, the official website of the State of Texas. Customers can also renew by phone at 1-866-357-3639. The eligibility requirements for phone renewal are the same as for online renewal. The fee is the same for online, in-person and telephone renewals. Licenses must be renewed in person every 12 years, so a new photo can be taken and eyesight can be tested. For more information about renewing your driver license or ID card, visithttp://www.dps.texas.gov/DriverLicense/renewal.htm.

Customers may obtain a replacement driver license or identification card online if they are able to provide the 20 character code on the front of their current license or card.

Visit the DPS website to make sure you have the proper paperwork (including documents needed for residency requirements) before making the trip to the office: http://www.dps.texas.gov/DriverLicense/ApplyforLicense.htm.

AUSTIN – The reward for Jared Luke Langley, 34, a Texas 10 Most Wanted Fugitive and this month's featured fugitive, has been increased to $12,500 for information leading to his capture if the tip is received in March. Langley, who has ties to the Aryan Brotherhood of Texas gang, is wanted for parole violation, burglary, theft, evading arrest and possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver/manufacture. All tips are guaranteed to be anonymous.

Jared Luke Langley

Langley has ties to Montgomery County and Madison County, including the city of Midway (his last known address). In June 2016, the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles issued a warrant for Langley's arrest for parole violation. In July 2016, Langley eluded capture from Madison County Sheriff's Office deputies after he fled on foot. For more information or updates in the event of his arrest, see his wanted bulletin at: www.dps.texas.gov/Texas10MostWanted/fugitiveDetails.aspx?id=344.

Langley is 5 feet 6 inches tall and weighs approximately 190 pounds. He has numerous tattoos on his abdomen, back, chest, both arms and both legs. He may be known by the nicknames "Twisted" or "Twist."
